You won’t be able to trade Pokemon online in Pokemon Go. Just like the previous Pokemon games, you’ll need to be in close proximity with the other player to trade a Pokemon.
Speaking to Polygon at GDC 2017 the senior product manager of the game, Tatsuo Nomura said that the trading will not happen online but in the real world.
He told, “We don’t want to just have that be an online game that you can just exchange virtually.”
“You shouldn’t be able to exchange your Pokemon with someone who is 100 miles away from you … The person needs to be in your proximity,” he added.
Nomura was also asked how they are planning to solve the problem of the players who are living in underpopulated areas. Their only hope to fill their Pokedex was by online trading.
“I wasn’t really thinking of trading as a way to solve the local area spawn issue,” Nomura replied. “That was more, we have a couple Pokemon that only spawn in a couple regions, and that was the hope, that some Pokemon you have to know someone or find someone who lives in certain regions and meet and exchange.”
Pokemon Trading is expected to come to Pokemon Go later this year.
