Rocket League is PS4/Xbox One Cross Network Play Ready And Only Needs Sony’s Approval

Rocket League fans around the world can begin preparing to celebrate being able to play with all their friends across PC, and now, finally, Xbox One.

In an interview with IGN, the vice president of Psyonix (developers of Rocket League) Jeremy Dunham stated that everything is in place for getting the cross-play up and running, it’s simply a matter of waiting on approval from Sony.

Specifically, Jeremy said:

“…we’re literally at the point where all we need is the go-ahead on the Sony side and we can, in less than a business day, turn it on and have it up and working no problem.”

Exciting, right? Psyonix have been working on cross-platform Xbox One/PS4 play for some time, figuring out how to make it feasible both technically and with regards to company politics. They sorted the technical aspect, now it’s just being told “yes” to implementing it.

How long do we have to wait for that to happen? Well, Jeremy said:

“It could be tomorrow, it could be longer than that. We just don’t know – we’re anxiously awaiting that, just like the rest of our fans.”

Jeremy does not take the wait as a bad thing from Sony, merely that it’s just a part of the process. Sony is a huge company, and it takes a while to make sure everything is the way they need it to be before making a decision. As for Jeremy’s thoughts on whether Sony will eventually give the go-ahead, he said:

“At the risk of sounding naïve, I do think it will happen. Whether or not it’ll be soon is another question.”

So there you have it. Cross play between the PS4 and Xbox One could just be right around the corner. With Psyonix already making it possible for cross-play between PS4 and PC and Xbox One and PC, it is probably just a matter of time before it happens the way Jeremy hopes.

The consequences of this happening could truly be huge. Blizzard have already considered the possibility for the same thing to happen with the uber-popular Overwatch. In a response to a Twitter user, the official Overwatch account stated:

@bickiya There is no cross platform play. We’ll keep an eye on cross-platform possibilities on the consoles.”

If Rocket League cross-play occurs, it could pus Blizzard to do the same and pave the way for future titles to follow suit. Gamers everywhere could eventually play with each other regardless of platform, which I can see as only being a good thing. Here’s hoping.
