Despite losing Game Of The Year at The Game Awards 2018, Marvel and Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man is still one of the best games we’ve seen in a long time – and we’re not the only ones who think so.
The game absolutely smashed records when it launched earlier this year, and it’s now been confirmed that the PlayStation exclusive is the fastest-selling PS4 game in the whole of the UK.
According to GameIndustry, Spider-Man is even set to overtake the UK’s current best-selling PS4 exclusive (this gen) – the one and only Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
Within three days of the game’s launch on 7th September 2018, over 3.3 million copes of Spider-Man were sold, making it one of the most successful launches for pretty much any game, ever.
At the time, USA Today did the maths on that figure and it’s estimated that “with a retail price of $59.99 for the game the 3.3 million copies translates to roughly $198 million.”
One million copies of Spider-Man were pre-ordered by fans before the official release, breaking records for Sony yet again. This one’s especially interesting, as within the community there’s been something of a backlash against pre-ordering titles…
Before Peter Parker came along, Kratos and pals held the record for highest number of sales for a PS4 exclusive, with God Of War selling a mammoth 3.1 million units within three days of release.
Although Spidey’s sales crushed Kratos’, The Game Awards 2018 picked God Of War for its Game Of The Year 2018.
The announcement came as a bit of a surprise, as it seemed Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 was going to be the sure-fire win.
The Rockstar title picked up the awards for BEST AUDIO DESIGN, BEST NARRATIVE and BEST PERFORMANCE, but the adventures of Arthur Morgan were bested by Kratos and friends for the knockout round.
