While the Western world is still talking about Detective Pikachu, Japan is getting all sorts of hyped for a brand-new animated Pokémon movie.
Back in the summer, Japan was treated to a sneak-peek of a mysterious new Poke-project at the start of its summer Pokémon movie, and now the new film finally has a name – and a teaser image.
Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is believed to be a throwback to the first feature-length Pokémon movie – Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back.
So far, not too much is known about the movie and it’s not yet clear whether it’s going to be a retelling, a reboot or an entirely new story. Judging from the name we can expect some Mewtwo-related goodness no matter what happens.
Apart from the name and a single teaser image, the only other things we know about the upcoming movie is that it’s being directed by Kunihiko Yuyama and Motonori Sakakibara [via NintendoLife]. Its screenplay will be written by Takeshi Shudo, and we can expect a trailer or plot details in the coming months.
My guesses about what Pokemon the movie 22 would be? Based on the staff info and merchandise lineup:
1. A CG movie of M01 Mewtwo Strikes Back
2. An adaptation of M01 with minor changes such as introducing a new form of Mewtwo or a new gen8 Pokemon or Meltan, etc. (CG or not CG)

Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution will release next summer, 12th July 2019. So far it’s only been confirmed as a Japanese release, but who knows if that’ll change or not.
Are you excited about the news?
It’s been a good year for Pokémon fans. From the first full trailer for Detective Pikachu to the recently-released Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee for the Nintendo Switch.
From the looks of things, the Pokémon fanbase is set to just get bigger and bigger!
